Thoughtful Tuesday: Job Stress and Mental Health

I'm sure many people have wondered if job stress contributes to underlying factors of mental health issues. The answer is yes. Unfortunately, finding a job is an essential part of becoming an adult. Although some of us come out lucky with jobs that we love, it doesn't change the fact that every job has its stressors and these stressors can contribute to a declining mental health. 

 

Many of us have jobs that are not our first choice, but because the stress of bills are constant, sometimes we have to sacrifice a job we love to make the money needed to live our everyday lives. Especially when we first graduate high school, college, technical schools, trade schools, etc. it can be difficult to allow yourself to be open to something outside of your field. You can combat this stress by reframing your situation into something positive. If there is room to grow and be promoted at this job, you look look at it as a growth opportunity as well as a learning opportunity. On top of this, many people do not start out with their first jobs being the one they continue to have for the rest of their working lives. Stay positive and try to learn something from each job you have. 

 

Make sure to get enough sleep. A lot of times, our jobs are stressful and/or anxiety provoking which makes it all the more reason to make sure you are getting enough sleep each night. Not only does this help alleviate some stress, but it can also help prevent more stress and other things like depression, burnout, and irritability. These things are common in people with high stress jobs. 

 

If deadlines are causing you stress, make sure to keep yourself organized. Create a planner for yourself or use calendars in your phone or laptop to help remind you when things are due. If procrastination is your worst enemy, try to split up your work in chunks to make it easier on yourself. Set reminders to complete your work on time to ease your workload and your stress. 

 

Following simple lifestyle changes such as these can help alleviate your stress and possibly prevent future stress from occurring. It is important to make sure you take care of yourself especially in a job that is intense, overwhelming, or anxiety provoking.
