Motivational Monday: From Helplessness to Hopefulness
How do we overcome the anxiety and distaste for yourself that comes with feeling helpless? What do you do when you are tired of feeling purposeless? At any age, feeling hopeless is natural; as human beings, we will never be motivated and inspired 100% of our lives. Despite this, no one likes feeling this way, so let us address this issue by learning ways to feel more connected.
Allow yourself to receive encouragement from others. We can be our own worst critics at times and this can seriously affect our self esteem. Your first reaction may be to deflect encouragement or let it roll off your shoulder; learn to embrace support from your peers.
Find ways to relieve feelings of helplessness. Coping skills are one way to relieve feelings of helplessness. Active coping skills tackle feelings that are uncomfortable head on by breaking the situation down. Volunteering your time for those in need is a great way to give back to your community all the while creating a purpose for you. For immediate relief of feelings of helplessness, you can use passive coping skills. These coping skills involve doing things like watching television or playing a sport. While passive coping seems enticing, in the long term, active coping skills are much more effective.
Identify negative thoughts and behaviors that may pay a part in feeling helplessness. Thoughts of worthlessness and feeling like the world is crumbling can contribute to helplessness. Many times individuals with anxiety experience thoughts of worst case scenario that can lead to feeling helpless. It is important to learn what activities trigger helplessness as well. Excessively drinking or using drugs could also be contributing factors in helplessness.
